April 2, 2010 (Judges 13-16, 2 Corinthians 2)

“And Manoah said, Now when your words come true, what is to be the child’s manner of life, and what is his mission? And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful.”                                       Judges 13:12-13 (ESV)

Bible Reading Comments:

The answer given to Manoah seems frustrating to me.  His question is clear enough.  It seems he simply wants more details so that he and his wife will know how to raise this anointed child.  Unfortunately for Manoah, the answer simply refers to what his wife has already heard . . . which isn’t much detail.  It seems a pretty clear pattern of God to reveal a step, or a piece of our life and then it is up to us to take the step before we get another glimpse of where He is taking us.  Unfortunately sometimes we continue to wait for “more detail” and we miss the opportunity to join with God in the plans He has invited us into.  What about you?  Are you asking for more detail, or have you stepped into the “glimpse” that God has given you today?

Prayer:

Father in Heaven, I ask for faith to hear even a glimpse of purpose or calling, and to follow you without having to know every detail of how Your plans and purposes will be played out.  Fill us with expectancy that You will guide us and empower us to walk alongside You in this journey of faith we call life.  I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

March 31, 2010 (Judges 9-10, Psalm 49, 1 Cor. 16)

“Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish.”                  Psalm 49:20 (ESV)

Bible Reading Comments:

“Man In his pomp . . .”  That phrase can certainly bring to mind plenty of men and women we see on the news each evening.  People caught up in the power structures of the world doing “great things” yet without a deep understanding of Jesus Christ as savior and Lord, or of the true nature of someone who leads.  Peter outlined what a true leader looks like when he said “not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples . . .”  The temptation is to follow the “pomp” and reach for the power of the world, but true power and influence comes from Jesus, the one who laid down his life and willingly sacrificed everything so that we could become “something” in Him.  I pray for understanding for myself, and for those who have fallen prey to the lure of pomp in this world.

Prayer:

Father, I pray for leaders and for those in positions of power in every realm of society.  Break through with the truth of the message of Jesus and bring understanding to each one so that their life will NOT be in vain.  I ask for understanding in our own lives so that we are protected from the deception of this world’s power.  May we lead by example and reveal a life of servanthood for Your glory.  I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

March 30, 2010 (Judges 8, Psalm 42, 1 Cor. 15)

“But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.”                     1 Cor. 15:20-23 (ESV)

Bible Reading Comments:

This coming Sunday we celebrate the Feast of Firstfruits.  Oh sure, I realize that almost everyone refers to it as Easter Sunday.  I’m also aware that there will be bunnies, eggs and lots of beautiful clothes.  I wonder however, how many will put aside the ideas the world has added to this day, and return to the core message of the resurrection of Jesus?  That is, resurrection power and life were made possible because Jesus became the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.  He is only the beginning, but what a glorious beginning He is!  It is precisely in this truth that we place our profound hope;  the hope that there is a calling and purpose beyond the world’s definitions.  The hope that our life is no more in vain than the life of Jesus was in vain.  The hope that recognizes Jesus Christ as our ONLY hope and that in HIM alone is found true life eternal.  This week and this weekend remember the good news of Jesus Christ and share the good news with at least one person.  In Jesus, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep, there is eternal hope for every person alive!

Prayer:

Father, reveal yourself and Your love again through this season of Firstfruits.  May Jesus’ name and glory be seen by many who will for the first time receive the eternal life and eternal hope that comes through Him alone.  I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

March 25, 2010 (Joshua 21-22, Psalm 47, 1 Cor. 10)

“God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne.”                     Psalm 47:8 (ESV)

Bible Reading Comments:

No matter how strained the nation feels, no matter what direction we go . . . God Still Reigns! Whether tempted to give up, or feeling a sense of discouragement, remember, God Still Reigns! He is seated on his holy throne . . . not running around frantically trying to find out how to fix things . . .  God Still Reigns! There is great comfort in knowing and living in that reality.  Walk in confidence today that God Still Reigns!

Prayer:

Father in Heaven, we are comforted and encouraged to remember that You Still Reign!  Fix our eyes and our thoughts on that reality today, and enable us to face whatever challenge we face with confidence and encouragement.  I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

March 23, 2010 (Joshua 15-17, 1 Cor. 8)

“But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.”     1 Corinthians 8:3 (ESV)

Bible Reading Comments:

Do we know a lot, or are we “known” a lot?  The bottom line will is not how much you “know” (Paul actually says that anyone who imagines that he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know).  In other words, thinking we’ve “got it” is a sure sign that we don’t!  In any case, God’s invitation to us is to grow in knowledge while loving Him more and more.  It is in a love relationship with God that we are known, and true and meaningful “being known” comes.  Do you know a lot, or are you known a lot?

Prayer:

Father, protect us from a false sense of “getting it”, and draw us more and more into a love relationship with You!  Fill our hearts with Your love and the warmth of knowing that we are known . . . truly known by You, our amazing loving Father.  I ask because Jesus made it possible, Amen.

March 16, 2010 (Deut. 30-31, Psalm 40, 1 Cor. 1)

“But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong,”  1 Corinthians 1:27 (ESV)

Bible Reading Comments:

I wonder if the church has forgotten this principle of God’s Kingdom.  Sometimes it seems we get caught up in just about as much “celebrity” as the world does.  Do we lift up certain ministries, or people and flock after their ministry/books/teaching/ideas?  In the process, have we lost sight of the “lowly” that serve and are called right around us?  Who are the “foolish” and “weak” that God is choosing, but whom we’ll never see because our eyes are looking too much toward the “wise and strong” according to the world’s standards?  My hope is that we’ll embrace those God has called and be able to see them even if they don’t fit into the world’s, or even the church’s paradigm of what makes a strong minister for God.

Prayer:

Father, I ask for our eyes to be opened and our hearts to be changed so that we are not led by the ideas and values of the world, but that we are led by Your Spirit to embrace and celebrate what You are doing through ALL of those You are choosing.  Lord, raise our awareness and open our eyes to see the weak and foolish ones that You are raising up for Your kingdom and for Your glory in this day.  I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

March 1, 2010 (Numbers 28-29, Mark 8)

“But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan!  For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.””                        Mark 8:33 (ESV)

Bible Reading Comments:

We don’t know exactly how Peter “rebuked” Jesus . . . perhaps he said something like “You’re not speaking faith!”, or maybe he went down the “you’re going to discourage the men with that kind of talk”, or perhaps it was more fearing for Jesus’ life and Peter was rebuking him for the statements about his death.  Whatever Peter’s rebuke was, we know Jesus’ rebuke.  It was a difference of where Peter needed to “set his mind”.  I wonder today where some of my thoughts will be based?   Will I be able to discern the things of man vs. the things of God?  Will you?

Prayer:

Father, I ask today for the grace to recognize and correct every time I set my mind on the things of men.  Correct me by Your Spirit, through Your Word, and by the words of trusted friends around me.  Turn my eyes from this world and the ways it works, and let them see Your “world” and the ways that You have worked and are working.  I ask for a church full of believers who will be focused on the “ways of God” so that your purposes will be accomplished on this earth.  I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

February 23, 2010 (Num. 12-13, Psa. 90, Mark 2)

“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”                      Psalm 90:12 (ESV)

Bible Reading Comments:

I decided to do a quick calculation this morning and discovered that this is my 16,423rd day on this earth!  According to Moses’ prayer, most of us will get between 25,568 and 29,221 days on the earth.  That means I have anywhere between 9,145 and 12,798 days left!  Perhaps a bit overboard on “counting our days” huh?  But I do wonder how many of us begin each day with prayer, purpose and the expectation that God will meet us today and God will enable us to make a difference for eternity if we’ll call on Him and walk with Him.  Moses ends this prayer by asking for four things.

  1. Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
  2. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us (in other words, pay us back with goodness for the trials we’ve suffered.)
  3. Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children.
  4. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands.

As I numbered my days this morning, these seemed like good prayer points for anyone to pray as we begin each of the days God gives us on this earth.

Prayer:

Father, like Moses in days of old, we ask for the satisfaction of Your steadfast love today so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days . . . make us a people of rejoicing.  We ask that you will give us goodness and make us glad for as many days as we have felt trials and “affliction”.  We ask that YOUR work be shown to us and that our children see YOUR glorious power.  And finally, we ask that everything we set our hand to this day would be granted YOUR favor and would be established by You and for Your glory.  We ask all of these things in the power and authority of Jesus’ name, Amen.

February 12, 2010 (Leviticus 18-19, Psalm 13, Acts 19)

“And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, I am the Lord your God. You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes.”                                                               Leviticus 18:1-3 (ESV)

Bible Reading Comments:

Reading the last few days in Acts and Leviticus, and having just traveled for three weeks in and around China, the Lord has continued to impress on me the significance of His people in relation to the world.  We are not meant to “fit in”, nor are we meant to “go along” with the ways of the world.  Rather, we are called to be salt and light and to proclaim and live in such a way that the world will notice it and perhaps even be offended.  I was deeply impacted in China by a day spent with two believers who belong to a church of 1,000 pastored by a man who spent 23 years in prison for his faith.  The testimony of faithfulness that they shared with me was moving beyond anything I have personally experienced to date in the church.  I hope to be able to share more of that experience with the church soon, but suffice to say that their witness and testimony to me spoke so clearly of the need to be people who “upset the status quo” and “turn the world upside down”.  My prayer is that the church of Jesus Christ will rise up today and live a counter-culture faith that declares Jesus Christ as the only way.  May Jesus be glorified as we live our lives ever more for Him as opposed to living our lives for us, and by the values of this world.

Prayer:

Father, search our hearts and draw us to a vibrant place of life with You, one that transforms the very way we view life and makes us ever more effective for Your glory and for Your kingdom.  Make us a church that stands for truth and righteousness and that is known for our “different” view of life here on earth.  I ask in the precious name of Jesus Christ, Your only son, Amen.

December 30, 2009 (Revelation 15-18)

“Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”

Revelation 16:1 (ESV)

Bible Reading Comments:

You don’t hear a lot about the wrath of God these days.  Most people and churches seem content to focus on God’s unending love and His abundant grace.  I must admit, these are much nicer topics to dwell on rather than God’s wrath, but there is a flaw when the wrath of God is removed from the picture.  First, it simply denies a Biblical view of God.  Second, it diminishes the reality of our own need and our own failures when it comes to living as God has planned.  Revelation (the end of the story) paints a horrifying picture of what it will be like to be on the receiving end of the pouring out of God’s wrath.  No one wants to experience God’s wrath . . . and no one has to.  God’s wrath is being stored up while he waits patiently for men and women to recognize Jesus as Lord and Savior and to give Him full reign in our lives.  His wrath is for those who refuse to see the need for Him, and who choose to live their lives apart from His salvation in Jesus Christ, apart from direction of his Word, and apart from His Lordship over our everyday life.

Prayer:

Father in Heaven, we ask for your patience and your grace to be on all those living today, that many more will come to know Jesus and acknowledge You as God before that dreadful day of the outpouring of Your wrath.  We ask because we know that You are patiently waiting for many more to come to You.  And we ask in Jesus’ powerful name, Amen.
